In April 2019 I travelled to Japan with my wife Kate and son Alfie. The experience was rich and laden with startling and curious impressions; so rich in fact that now, after a period of time, it all feels like a dream whose detail is fading, but whose overall sense of wonder remains strong. We visited Tokyo, the Alps, a secluded valley full of bamboo groves and tea plantations near Shizuoka, the ‘art’ island of Naoshima and Kyoto. I had the curious sense of being constantly disorientated, but at the same time, struck by the underlying familiarity of everything I saw. I took about 1800 pictures, probably far too many.
